What is the dress code for the Symphony San Jose? ›

Whether you prefer a formal or a more relaxed look, feel free to dress according to your personal comfort and style when joining us at Symphony San Jose.

Led by an exciting roster of distinguished guest conductors on the European model, the Symphony is an anchor tenant of San Jose's magnificently restored downtown California Theatre, one of Northern California's most outstanding music halls. There, audiences and critics alike greet its concerts with enthusiasm.

Built in 1927 and renovated from 2001-2004, this venue is one of the best-preserved movie palaces in the nation.

There is no official dress code, you'll see guests wearing everything from jeans to co*cktail dresses. Most guests choose business attire or business casual. Enjoy dressing up and making a special night of it, or dress more laid back. Anything that makes you feel comfortable and covers appropriately.

Opting for overly casual clothing, such as ripped jeans, shorts, flip-flops, or t-shirts with bold graphics, can be disrespectful and distract from the formal setting. Loud and flashy accessories like large, clunky jewelry or overly vibrant colors should also be avoided, as they can draw attention away from the music.

There are very few positions open at any given time, relative to the supply of interested musicians. There may be dozens and dozens of candidates auditioning for a single position, and the standards are so high, sometimes dozens and dozens of candidates are heard and still no one is deemed acceptable.

The word "symphony" comes from sinfonia: derived from the Greek syn meaning "together" and phonê meaning "voice, or sound", it meant, "playing together"; the perfect name for this new genre.

History. Formerly known as the Jose Theater, built in 1904, is the oldest theater in San Jose, located on Second Street, near San Fernando Street. Construction of the Jose was started in 1903, under the ownership of David Jacks, a Monterey landowner (who was the namesake of Monterrey Jack cheese).
