Music - B'nai Jeshurun (18)

Rabbi Abraham Ibn Ezra (Spain, 12th Century)

This is the opening piyut of Yom Kippur in the Sephardic tradition. With over 40 stanzas, it is the longest piyut in the entire year cycle and it may take up to 30 minutes to sing it in its entirety, thus providing the opportunity to enter slowly and intentionally into the holiest day of the year.

We have selected a number of stanzas of this long piyut, and we sing it in a traditional Moroccan melody, as arranged by the Israeli singer Ishay Ribo.

It is a deep piyut of dedication, recited in the first person singular, meant to establish a direct, intimate relationship between the worshiper and God. Even as we pray in community, each person stands before God alone, as an individual, seeking to draw near and to offer oneself fully, authentically, humbly and without pretensions. The true spiritual work of teshuvah, of return and repentance, during the 25 hours of Yom Kippur demands no less than the intense and sustained devotion that this piyut calls for. May our prayers and devotion on Yom Kippur bring us into God's Presence of love and forgiveness.
